A Big Surprise!

Yap Ling had a big shock when he heard his name being yelled at from behind by someone in the MRT when he was on his way to meet Yeo Jan Wea for lunch. This someone is none other than Amin of Jakarta, Yap Ling's old violin pal from the 1985 ASEAN Music Workshop and 1990 World Music Camp, KL. The 2nd surprise came when they met up with Jan Wea (Singaporean Violist) whom had also attended 1985 ASEAN Music Workshop and later the Pacific Music Festival in Japan. What an impromptu meet up!! They treasured this friendship tie. Thanks to ASEAN Music Workshop!

Yap Ling attended the Concert by the SSO conducted by Okko Kamu at the Singapore Esplanade. The program includes famous cellist, Wang Jian playing the Saint-Saen's Cello Concerto No.1 in A minor, Op.33and Prokofiev's Symphony No.1 in D, Op.25 'Classical' beside the Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring.

Tang Kie Sing who has migrated to NZ with his family was back in Sibu for holiday. Whereas Grace Lee and I were back from KK for Hwai Ang Church's New Year Eve Concert. Thanks to Law Cheng Tiong and Mrs Law for treating all of us a big lunch at Sheraton Restuarant. It brings back good memories from years back when we were all together attending the same church in Sibu. They were all my former students before. Law Cheng Tiong (violin) with 2 sons learning the violins and 1 daugther on the cello. As for Tang Kie Sing (Double Bass), the whole family was playing in the same orchestra. Janet the wife, playing the cello and the 3 kids playing the violin. Both families are very passionate about music indeed.

Haven't seen them for quite awhile, Yu-Ying & Chek Meng, both are the violinists for the famous Singapore's T'ang String Quartet. They are also the resident quartet for the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory where they teach chamber music. We were college mates before at the Royal Academy 20 years back. Yu-Ying was in the same year with me even having the same teacher, Clarence Myerscough for a year.

Meeting with the founder and executive director of Music for Our Young Foundation (MOY), Hong Kong.

Gordon Siu, the chairman and founder and Cynthia Wong, the Executive Director of the foundation came especially to meet up with Yap Ling at the KL Marriot Hotel on the morning of 15 July. Yap Ling was introduced to them by his former classmate, Li Kee Seng whom he hasn't met since From 3 at SMB. St.Joseph, Kuching.

MOY is a charitable organisation. Their focus is music training for young people. MOY sets a goal for those receiving training, a goal which can only be reached through hard work and discipline. Hopefully this meeting will become the beginning of something significant to come in term of promoting classical music to the youth here in Malaysia.

Yap Ling & family were treated to a nice dinner by Lau Yun Tseng (lawyer) & family in Sibu. Lots of catching up to do over 1 dinner at the riverfront with old friend. We used to meet up once awhile either in McDonald or KFC during our time in London 20 years ago. Those 2 places are the only affordable places for us during our student days.

Old Friends from the Philippines

Yap Ling was having supper with his old friends and members of the JPO. They were here to help in the Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra Concert 08'. Among the few are: Loo Bang Hean (MP3rio pianist from KL), Prof. Antonio Maigue "Tony" (Flutist. He was Yap Ling's roomate for 3 weeks at the Pacific Music Festival [PMF] in Sapporo, Japan in 1990), Prof. Arturo Molina "Toti" (Conductor, He & Yap Ling were the violin tutors at the ASEAN Music Workshop in Jakarta in 1991).

Grace and I were treated by Toti and his wife, Heidi to a fantastic meal at the Aristocrat Restaurant where they are famous for their BBQ chicken. The restaurant is opened 24 hours and it was still packed with people even after midnight. We were there from about 11pm on 31 July till 2am, 1 August. The food is just delicious.

A dinner treat at KKK restaurant, Robinsons Plaza by Jamie Sales who is back to Philippines for holidays. Jamie is the violin/viola teacher at the Jerudong International School, Brunei who will be helping me with the Kian Kok Youth Orchestra this August in KK. He is so kind to bring us around Manila (better than any tour guide). We are also very fortunate to be able to meet up with old friend, Prof. Toti (Arturo Molina) who was representing the Philippines as violin tutor for the 2nd Cycle of the ASEAN Music Workshop in Jakarta in 1990. I was then the violin tutor representing Malaysia.

Prof. Toti is now a full time violin professor teaching at University of Philippines. He also teaches at St.Scholastica's College and a resident conductor of the Manila Symphony Orchestra.

Old friend from Kuching, Ng Sie Ai. We used to teach the violin together at UNIMAS, Kuching and later she became a full time lecturer there. She is now back from US for summer holiday - off from her post graduate study. She comes to KK for her related conference at UMS. What a bad timing, she is coming to KK and we are going off to Philippines but at least we managed to meet at the Terminal 2 Airport.

Sunday, 26th August is another day of 2 big events that I am involved :-

1) KK Music Festival organised by KKMS - Whole day of music competition for all at all levels in Pacific Sutera Hotel where many of my students are taking part and won quite a number of prizes.

2) Kian Kok Youth Orchestra (KKYO) Concert at Kian Kok Middle School Hall at 7.30pm - Its 2nd annual orchestra concert with invited guest Singaporean violinist Mr Foo Say Ming.
